1839 British Proof set of Queen Victoria realizes R12 500 000.00

Recommended Posts

My recollection is that the 5 sovereign on one occasion sold for close to the price of this set but I don't have the specifics.

I remember back in 2003 or 2004 when a PR-62 sold at a Goldberg's auction for around $25,000.  Now it is routinely a $250,000 coin.  British proof gold and (most) of the 1839 set are also a lot more expensive.  A further example is the 1937 KGVI 5 sovereign.  It's a common coin with 5,001 minted routinely selling for five figures.

It's my inference that American buyers are behind this price run-up, as usual.
