Hello

It looks like a worn down ZAR coin that was re-engraved on the reverse and clad in colour enamel.

People did this for jewellery pieces.

Robert is correct - it is an enameled ZAR 2-Shillings but the date is strange - 1891?

No 2-shillings were struck in that year - what is the weight of the item?

Thanks for the reply guys.

The 1891 date stumped me as well.

I don't physically have the coin so am not able to weigh it.

The client stated that she received it from her great-grandmother's estate, so it is obviously old.

I would say the reverse was worn too flat for there to be any noticeable detail, hence it was re-engraved. Look at the jaggard edging on the lion, man and even the block wording.

Perhaps the last numeral was worn away and the engraver used artistic liberty...
