Investment Stone Pick of the week

Recommended Posts

Lukeness

Hi Lisa,

The "Secinic Opal" would, in English, be a dendritic Scenic Opal.

It is a crystal opal with Dendrite inclusions that display a "scene".

They can sometimes have what is called "play of colour" which is the multi colour effect on an opal's surface caused by the alignment of the particles in the crystal. This example does not display this phenomena.

It is however a great size and the Dendrite inclusions are (in the picture) a great colour too.

A very nice collectors piece but not an investment piece. Looks like a great price too.

rather concentrate your searches on dendritic opal

Dentritic opals does not display those beautiful flashes of color that opal is famous for, but it does have a fantastic pattern of fern-like dendrites made of manganese trapped inside the crystalline structure of the cream-colored opal, making this an intriquing and unique gemstone

Investment stone Pick of the week

Thx Lukeness and Gemshop.

I have searched for Dendritic opal, and only found matt-white examples, with black dendrites, nowhere near what I've just bought, hence the enquiry.

But I'm very excited, and can't wait to receive it. I'm buying more for collection than investment, so it's perfect.

I must say that I had the confidence to bid on it, even before receiving an answer, due to the excellent reputation Gemshop has built for himself, as is evident from the forum. (I was sure I wasn't buying 'goldstone')

I agree on the size and colour but not on the clarity rating.

From the pics that stone is pretty far from "eye-clean", as its so-called SI1 implies...

I don't see why you shouldn't nominate your own stones. If they're good, they're good! lol

Yes well... that is rather frightening...

Hi luke. I have a question:

If the scale weighs 0.001g how will it be able to measure 0.005ct?

If one CT is 0.2g then 0.005ct would be 0.0001g not true? Sorry if I'm mistaken but it seems very strange.

I have actually tried to get my hands on the 0.005ct and 0.001ct units, and suppliers including diamond said that those figures just doesn't work with the term "pocket scale" But I'm always looking around ;)

Hi Gem Deals and Luke

The scale does measure 0.005cts. The reason why it only measues as low as 0.001g is because there are only 3 decimal places on the LCD screen. The lowest grams it can display is 0.001g. I'm sure if the LCD had an extra degit it would display lower grams.

I hope this clarifies

Ah, cool thanks. that explains a lot. :)

What make is it? it should show on the bottom of the scale? or is there a model number for it?

Kind regards,

Chris.

You need to have no conscience to put this kind of values on this type of gems

Ugliest sapphire I have ever seen

Speaking of over priced...

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4911135

And what is this crap?

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4955425

I'd also like to add that that is not a jelly opal...

This stone must be very tired. It has been sold hundreds of times if the comment that the image is of the actual diamond is true... Strange how it appears in other listings as well, some say it is a stock photo, others that it's the actual stone. Over and over. I'm not too though worried since it is pretty ugly and I would imagine bought in bulk so individual pics would be a pain. I still feel the following should be replaced by an indication that it is a stock picture rather than: "THIS PHOTO IS THE ACTUAL DIAMON, WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET!!"

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4769966

Aside from that I must commend the seller of the above for the fantastic way in which she has gone about changing the bulk of her listings to comply with the guidelines and is using her own pics.

How I would love to test this stone!!! Would be interesting to see what it really looks like...

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4930652

Remember that these do not test for Moisannite Still a good investment at an excellent price:

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4771643

Please be aware that there is no such thing as a "fancy coloured ruby". These are ugly sapphires and rubies. I would disregard the claim of only heat treatment and assume glass filling too. Amongst other things.

This is generally the rule for Madagascar rubies.

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4537534

This seller has been admirably honest in this listing, but oh my word, what a shocker! I do find this statement by the seller " Note: The seller's own clarity grading system has been used in the clarity grading of this gem as none of the systems recommended in Bid or Buy's Gemstone Selling Guide suit this particular seller's needs. An accurate and honest clarity grading has been undertaken and will hopefully satisfy a discerning buyer's needs." rather odd, since he does pretty much adhere to the guidelines... But at the end of the it's full disclosure we want and he does not hold back. http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4747164

This week I've separated the listings by seller to make it easier. There are loads of exceptional stones currently listed. (Check back periodically as I will update this list)

From TopDrawer

TOP PICK THIS WEEK!

0.63 CARAT CEYLON PADPARADSCHA SAPPHIRES

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4928729

If you can, BUY THIS STONE. This is the rarest, most expensive and most collectable of all fancy-colour sapphires. From the picture, the colour looks spot on! Padparadsha sapphires are the stuff of legends.

2.42 CARAT KUNZITE

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4959352

Great collectors and investors stone. High quality example of a high-end gemstone variety. Buyers please note that Kunzite is a "night-stone". It is best worn in dark environments as the variety does suffer from natural colour fading if exposed to strong light or sunlight for extended periods.

1.27 CARAT SAPPHIRE BLUE KYANITE

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4960147

Great example of one of the most difficult stone to cut. What a colour!

VERY RARE at this clarity!

DARK BLUE GREEN TOURMALINE (INDICOLITE)

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4905843

I don't even need top say it. Wonderful gem

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Gemzone

Top Quality Large Lapis Lazuli Oval Cabs - 4 on offer - 2.58cts avg, each!

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4604355

Somebody start bidding!!! The prices are so low it's frightening! Not really investment stones but collectable and one of the real classics (Lapis Lazuli was in fact originally called sapphire until the discovery of gem grade corrundum).

Round Button Pink Pearl Set - 7.30cts Total!

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4781644

Breathtaking. Highly collectable and good investments. The price of pearls is currently sky-rocketing (all types) and record prices are being paid. Excellent buy.

Rare Natural Sphene Oval Facet - 3.17cts

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4944803

These are notoriously difficult to photograph and usually look much better in person. Just short of eye-clean for a very collectable stone.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Just Jewels

UNHEATED PURPLE SAPPHIRE (1.14 Ct)

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4741142

I have to post this even though it's about to close get in a bid now if you still can. The seller has definitely sold himself short on the estimated value. But that is to be expected from Just Jewels. Honesty and integrity.

PINK KUNZITE (6.95 Ct)

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4922550

HUGE! BRIGHT! SATURATED! This would have been the top pick of the week if not for the Padparadsha. Please not the comment about Kunzite above.

HIDDENITE (8.60Ct)

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4948903

Just Jewels is really pulling out the stops this week! Just when I think I've seen something WOW I see this! Same comments as the Kunzite. Hiddenite is rare, collectable and expensive! It is also a "night-stone". (Hiddenite and Kunzite are both varieties of Spodumene).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Gem Shop

1.1ct Bytownite Trillian

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4950146

Lovely cut. Very collectable and good investment stone. Ending soon at a real bargain price. Get a bid in fast.

2.85CT LIGHT ROSE PINK MORGANITE

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4961304

Lovely subtle colours in this highly collectable stone. Great size for jewellery. Once again, ending tonight and still priced VERY LOW. Get your bids in now or lose out on this beauty.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Gem Search

85ct FLAWLESS NATURAL TOPAZ WITH A PINK TINGE!!!! - Gem Search

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4859404

KYANITE - CORNFLOWER BLUE EMERALD FACET - 0.835cts

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4550440

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Talitha

Pinkish Kunzite, 1.20ctw Plus, Emerald cut

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4888428

Another one!
