Investment Stone Pick of the week

Recommended Posts

Lukeness

I'm starting this thread for listings to be posted of the top investment stones listed every week. We can go over the pros and cons and discuss the various selections. This will hopefully create buyer awareness and encourage sellers to list more investment quality gems.

Please not that any listings are not endorsements of the listings as they are based on the information provided in the listings only

This week's pick

RARE AAA ALEXANDRITE 0.37 Carat – TopDrawer

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4130566

Good colour natural Alexandrite is both rare and sought after. Top green to red colour change are the rarest and very expensive.

LARGE TAHITIAN PEARL, 8.68ct 11x10mm - Talitha

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4134119

Pearl prices, particularly naturals, are steadily regaining their position is hugely expensive gems. Recent auctions by Christies have fetched record prices. Tahitian Pearls are cultured salt water pearls and have a longer growth period than fresh water pearls.

PARAIBA BLUE GREEN TOURMALINE 1.41CT - 24GEMS

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4126124

Paraiba tourmaline has seen massive price growth. While non-brazillian sources have slowed the increase slightly in gems from the source, paraiba type tourmaline from all other locations has seen a surge in popularity and price

NEON BLUE/GREEN TOURMALINE SET (2.32 TCwt) - Just Jewels

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4069967

As above

TSAVORITE SPECTACULAR HOT GREEN - SA GEM IMPORT CO

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4092474

Tsavorite is rare and most specimens are too dark (tone). Bright stones with good tone are sought after. Garnets are traditionally believed to be red and the green grosular and tsavorite garnets have turned this theory on it's head (along with several other discoveries, INCLUDING ULTR-RARE BLUE). Good tsavorite is very expensive. Limited area keeps supply low and prices up. Great colour

Thanks Lukeness for this thread, just noticed it........ fantastic idea.

I am presently seriously looking at two of the items you mentioned.

To help all us novices what about adding a "guide" price, with the link? :D

Here's another top-notch stone:

BRILLIANT CARMINE PINK/ORANGE BURMESE RUBY!! 1.570CTS!!

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4155765

While clarity is SI that is after-all technically "eye-clean" so still a beaut. This colour is very close to what is known as Padparadsha and many sellers would even sell it as such although this seller has stated that it is not.

These colours are highly sought after and collectable. Be diffusion treated stones can come close to the colour but it is fairly rare in nature and commands a high price.

Great size for any use. Great looking for jewellery. AND always great to have a conversation starter! This is a stone people wil talk about.

Anything that's still available!

lol

Any one of those would be a good investment. Their prices are way below what I would estimate their values to be with the specs given in the listings.

Well I'm wating for all the new crazy auctions to be listed before I compile this weeks pick.

But I came across this one this morning and couldn't let it pass"

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4199562

As I have said in another thread, top red and blue spinel prices are increasingly rapidly. This is a matching pair so it's especially great. As a R1 auction on until tomorrow with no bids as yet, someone is going to be damn lucky. Both stones are over a carat it you could use these for just about anything. BEAUTIFUL stones at a STEAL!

I can also tell you that the estimated value on this one is almost exactly where I would put it (retail) based on the data given.

Here's another winner:

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4152897

This ruby is absolutely mouth watering! An unusual cut, great colour, and eye-clean. Plus it has that "sleepy" look you sometimes seen in kashmir sapphires caused my microscopic silk. At 3.19 Ct it's quite a whopper and would make anyone proud to wear it. It's heated only so still a great investment stone. This one WILL appreciate!

Happy bidding!

BARGAIN DIAMOND

I'm not usually one to push diamonds, but for those of you who cannot afford to do it, http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4298843

This is still at an incredibly low price. I also agree with a dealer/trade value of a little over R40 000.

There are only a few days left and this is a good potential investment.

At 1.92CTS it's also quite a stone.

1,44 Carat Tanzanite Trilliant

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4410825

Nice stone, good price right now. I think Tanzanite has been covered as an investment stone...

I am not really in favour sellers offering Gemval results as appraisals. As Gemval itself acknowledges it's appraisals are estimates only.

BALTIC AMBER

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4282391

There is so much fake chinese amber on the market that great examples like this are a treat. Great for all collectors too

1.29 CARAT RUBELLITE

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4308403

Not exactly eye-clean, lol, but in these gems, it's the colour that really counts. And this one has it!

More to come in a few hours.

I've been a little tied up but let's try and get these threads moving again.

To start:

COLOUR CHANGING GARNET - GEM IMPORT CO

Great for investors and collectors!!! Small, but FANTASTIC!!

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4767893

Amazingly Clear Emerald - Gem Shop

Small, but looking like that.. SO WHAT!

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4760204

SAPPHIRE DEEP BLUE OVAL FACET - 2.60cts - REDHAWK (pictures are looking good!)

Great colour and a really nice size.

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4404040

AUTHENTIC 0.45 CARAT ALEXANDRITE - TopDrawer

Yes, it's included, but that's not unusual for the species. This truly is a great buy. I would enter the GIA class 2 details of SI1 into gemval to get a better reflection of trade/wholesale value. This is my top pick this week.

Investment stone Pick of the week

This is typical of me! I've been on the site for a while now, and only now do I realise that the forum exists (Thanks Bevan - Just Jewels) My mom always calls me "Vrek voor jy vra"

I'm a newby collector, and have just enough knowledge to make me dangerous (especially to myself  )

I have never heard of this stone, and I am unable to locate any source of information on it (except another listing on e-bay  )

Have a look, please, with my question to the seller and their answer:

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=4827804

What is this, and where do I find more info on it?

I'm not doubting the seller, just immensely curious.

This thread was a great idea, Lukeness, thanx!
