Uploaded images are stangely resized ...

Being the nice chap that I am, I save the bookcover images as 8-bit PNG's (with dimensions of 308x450 pixels at 96dpi). But when I upload these, the BoB machine converts them to 24-bit PNG's AND RESIZES THEM TO 500x731 pixels. Naturally with a considerable increase in filesize (and thus time to download).

Hi there - if the uploaded image is greater than 50KB we run ImageMagick over it which scales it to 500px wide and reduces the quality to 75%. This works reasonably well in the majority of cases where users upload uncropped images. I think you will probably find that you get better results if you upload a bigger image in JPEG format.

Hey, it's your space, so have fun filling it!

Seriously though, how about recoding your program to actually compare before and after filesize? Also, JPEG doesn't do well with the text in the images, so I prefer PNG.
