Two Bodyguards Die in Attack on Colombian Emerald Mogul

 

BOGOTA – Two men were killed and two others wounded, all apparently bodyguards for Colombia’s main emerald merchant, Victor Carranza, in an attack on the mogul along a highway in the Eastern Plains in Meta province, officials said Sunday.

 

The attack occurred about midnight on Saturday a few kilometers (miles) from downtown Puerto Lopez, the city’s mayor, Juan Gualteros, said.

 

Carranza was unhurt in the attempted hit, which was staged at a spot known as La Bonga, when unknown gunmen opened fire on the vehicles in which he and his bodyguards were traveling.

 

The wounded men are receiving care at the Puerto Lopez hospital, and Gualteros announced that a security meeting would be held to put in place measures to prevent such attacks in the future.

 

Carranza, one of the richest men in Colombia, was in the area to visit some properties he owns, the mayor said.
