Uncollectibility of Items in Antiques and Collectables: Crazy Wednesday & Snap Friday

Recommended Posts

booksallsizes

This is not a serious complaint as such, but something I've noticed creeping in:

People placing new items, very obviously one of many, as I see them every single week (so NOT collectible) on Crazy Wednesday and Snap Friday in the Antiques and Collectibles section. Lighters, shot glasses and gems etc.

It's getting so I skip the last couple of pages because that's where these listings are usually lurking.

Has anybody else noticed this? I just mention it because I foresee a problem when there's a free for all listing trend in the future...

But perhaps I'm being pedantic.

Mmm, this is going on for at least the past year already - there's usually +- 15/20 pages under antiques/collectables on Crazy Wed & at least half of that is in no way collectable. Seems the antique/collectable section is bn used as a dumping ground for just about anything.

These items must be reported via the Spot a Problem link. We won't necessarily know if an item is colletcable or not, therefore, as much info on the items must be supplied for us to make a decision.

Thank you.

I have reported a couple of times but to no avail. Was told that the items may be collectible. But it's obvious to anyone that they're not. Brand new lighters and shot glasses that appear week after week, multiple items available for sale. So I let it ride. (but it's getting worse now).

I understand the difficulty of telling whether something (secondhand) is collectible or not but the listings I mean are not in this grey area.

It's the same with watches. In the rare and collectible section the following listing for new cheap watches appears.

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/130677968/Aaaa_NEW_colourful_watches.html

Or

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/133343102/Spy_Watch_with_Camera_DV_MP3_Water_Resistant_Stylish.html

None of the watches advertised here are rare or collectible.

Guess the sellers are desparate for sales.

When we get the complaints we do review them and do discuss this with other parties and the category managers. Often these items are collectable in nature. For example, people do collect Zippo lighters and some are considered sought after collectable items. If you feel an item is not collectable please do report it, after reviewing it we will either warn the seller or allow the item to be listed.

We will address this with both the sellers concerned.

I've noticed one new gem seller in particular is listing many items in unrelated categories (incl Antiques and Collectibles).

Reported via CW several times and this seller is still continuing with his / her antics.

Here is something that I do not consider antique or collectable: a new cigarrette rolling machine. This item is on this upcoming week's crazy wednesday. http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/134342469/Cigarette_Rolling_Machine_for_Tobacco_Herbs_in_Perspex_BARGAIN_STARTING_at_R1_00.html

Weekend specials:

Who considers the following item collectable? A skull decanter (new)

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/133955720/_LOCAL_STOCK_Crystal_Head_Skull_Bone_Vodka_Whiskey_Glass_Bottle_Decanter_Cup_Home_Bar_350ML.html

And what about a DRINKO game? Collectable, antique??

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/133940939/DRINKO_SHOT_GAME.html

Boxes of matches?????? YES! I want to collect them all - all 100!! I only have to wait about 60++ years before they are collectable or antique.

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/133940958/Hubbly_Matches.html

One easy solution is to filter out "new" items. But then http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/134078841/Coca_Cola_Straw_Holder_Includes_50_straws.html would be filtered out - and it is new but collectable in some sense.

Amcintyre - these are exactly the items I was talking about. And the lighters are certainly not Zippo lighters. The seller in question with those lighters has not listed this week on CW in the Antiques section - perhaps he read this thread...

And Cali - those gems being listed in the Antiques section are an example of how more and more people are listing wherever they want to, regardless of what it is...

We are going to look into this and speak to the sellers. The Category Administrators will also be involved.

This is what I've complained about on community watch before and nothing has happened. Maybe it is collectable... But I see these in shops quite a lot... For sale on CW this week (and every week for the last two months)

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/134645800/Blue_Bulls_Refillable_Butane_Cigarette_Lighter.html

For many Bulls fans, they do collect all sorts of memorabilia, so this could potentially be considered a "collectable" item.

However, it may take some time to work through all of these issues.

Perhaps there needs to be another "set" of categories for other types of collectibles that are not Antique ? Not sure how you would do that but it could solve alot of "mis-categorized" goodies especially on Crazy Wednesdays. If you look at those that are clearly not Antiques, and ask the question : Where else could it be listed ? Often the answer is I actually don't know. So in all fairness perhaps these habitual wrong listing sellers also have the same issue. Just a thought.

Antiques and collectable items are not the same. Most sites combine these categories due the nature of the items they include. An item can be collectable without being an antique and vice versa.

We are busy looking into this and we already have categories set up in Home and Living:

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/category/11046/Home_Living_In_the_Home_Bar.jsp

The problem is the definition of what is collectable, as many items could be considered collectable in nature without being antique or vintage.

It's also about educating these sellers to list in the most appropriate category, the gemstone seller has agreed to not list in this category going forward.

Any Bulls item is very collectible. And Real Madrid, Arsenal and AC Milan. Some also collect cheaper, inferior quality items from lesser teams

such as Stormers, Sharks, Barcelona and Juventus.

As a suggestion, perhaps if one could create or promote a sub-category under Sports named Sport Memorabilia or Collectables? This could then shift the items out of the Antiques section into a specialised section of their own.

(Oops - see there is already this sub-category... shows how often I browse the other sections of BoB!) :embarrest:

The main problem is that many items can be listed in multiple categories... not an easy one to fix.

PS. The gemstone seller has listed items under the Antiques section for the weekend specials again... no surprise!

PPS. Whilst on the subject of items in the wrong section, take a peek at the listings for the Weekend Specials under Gift Vouchers and Coupons. Here you will find an Ukulele (music instrument), sandals, mugs, candles and a jewellery display unit!

Come on now... seriously? Here too these items have been reported via CW, and they're still there week after week! (either nothing is being done about it, or the sellers are blatantly ignoring BoB!)

I think it is a case of too lazy to change the category when listing items so just leave it ?

The seller was spoken to, we are checking if this item listing was created before we spoke to them.

Some of the sellers simmply ignore the request or warning. If they repeatedly don't comply we will be taking further action.
