Al Debbo

I've been going through my collection of 78's and found about ten recordings of Al Debbo (who passed on in 2011). As far as I can tell, these recordings were made in the late 40's or possibly early 50's. His singing style was very unusual. Here is a link, for thos interested, of his bizarre version of "Alibama". Enjoy - listen the whole way through to where he is screaming by the end.

There's a tale in our family that goes when Al Debbo was doing a performance in Upington (in the late 1950's), my grandmother was sitting in the front row. She kept looking at Debbo with this blank, bored look and finally he stopped doing the gag he was doing (in mid-gag) and asked her: "Mevrou, dit lyk my nie jy dink ek is snaaks nie?" To which she replied (with a heavy Dutch accent): "Nee." Apparently he didn't continue with the same gusto as before.
