Mandela banknote series

I’ve had a few of the new notes in my hands and wondered what the general feeling is about them.

What I like most about them is their feel. To me they feel more substantial than the old ones, like a banknote should. What I disliked at first glance was the heavy colour of the print. Looking at other modern world banknotes, this seems to be the trend, but I’m still in two minds. I am sure this series will be popular with tourists and become an export item of note (no pun intended).

It would be interesting to hear the opinion of others through the forum.

Not bad, in my opinion, but I do agree, the colours are very heavy. Something to talk about at the local watering hole at least.

I love them and the vibrant colour and detail and if you take the R50 and look at the water mark, up in the light, it looks kinda like the actor "John Larequette"...(Night Court fame)

Me too, love them! The heavier gsm definitely make them feel more like money should feel, superb printing when you take a really good look, and super detail too. I especially like the bling-bling effect on the metal strippies, very pretty.

The colour rubs off and they easy to copy even with all the so called security features so a waste of money.

The bushman hunting drawings suck. Makes us look primitive.

When notes are first printed then released does the colour or excess colour normally rub off in the beginning like these notes are doing?

The colour rubs off ...

So does the colour on a TW de Jongh R2 note.

Don't leave these new notes in a pocket and allow it to land in the wash, the colour changes or fades and you can't use the note anymore.

Eish Tananka, that's a thought quite frightening. Wouldn't want to deface legal tender to verify what you say, so searched the web as best I could and can't find any other references to this (colour changing ink, yes but nothing about fading in the wash).

Is the printing completely washed off, the serial numbers too? And do you still have the note, maybe you could post a pic?

The government had to curb money laundering, so to speak.

It happened to a friend of mine, his R100 washed out and he was most upset.

Could be one of the 'new' fake R100's that have found miraculously their way into circulation...
