Duties/Tax related to International Courier Shipments

Has anyone who purchased tablets from Hong Kong / other International sellers incurred duty fees and if so, how much ? Some sellers suggest that if the value of the item is less than R 500, there is generally no duty fees. If so, what would the general customs tax / duty amount be for items in the price range of ~ R 1500 ?

Customs can impose 15% import taxes, but definitely they will impose the 14% vat as well as a minimal handling charge.

Items under R500 normally are exempted, but this is not a rule, it depends on the customs officer. If you cannot produce an invoice, they will work on the SA price. Also, if you did not pay shipping, they may impose shipping costs as well.

around R130 for R1500, usually , thats for tax and sometime clearing adds a few rand ( documents ) if you are bringing in lots you must enquire about FOB , that can be expensive if goods are long way from the airport , some companies charge it allways ,(free On Board )Mark it as a toy also helps lots except if they open it .Lots of companies wont mark it as something else or give it a false value its risky and can then sit at customs for weeks waiting for the correct docs.rather pay the few rand extra and bring it in legally , the courier will do all that for you ,also if more than 3 identical items it is classified as to be resold , without a permit they have the ability to nail you hard , and usually do .
