Yellow Tanzanite

Recommended Posts

hi, Tanzanite is not a mineral!, it is just a marketing name for violet-blue-green Zoicite, there is no such thing as yellow Tanzanite...period! .... it is Zoicite!

Neither is it rare, it simply has not been heated! to achieve their fantastic colours Zoicite must be heated...., it then becomes Tanzanite, without heat treatment there is no Tanzanite!!.... sorry to shatter any illusions!!

Tanzanite is one of the few gemstones that are actually worth more when heated!

an example below of when the heating process was not successful, resulting in a 2 tone stone.

Thanks guys - your input is much appreciated.

Thought it was "too good to be true"... (although I'd never lay out that much for any gem - even a "rare" one!)

As a novice :) this is very interresting - My question, how do they get the diffirent colour blue's when heated? I mean the very dark-deep blue are more expensive, so why not make them all like that?

or do the deep yellows come out deep blue? :?

hi, there are many factors to consider, the first being the colour of the rough material when it is dug from the ground, it comes in many different colours, yelow, green, brown, purple brown, each will heat a different colour and there is no sure way to know the end result before it is done.

Tanzanite is trichroic and dichroic after heating , ie - it shows different colors when viewed in different directions , so the depth of colour also depends at what angle the rough is cut, sometimes the cutter will have to decide between the best weight return or the best colour, with the best colour obtained by sacrificing carot weight! Increasing the size of the pavillion(underneath/base) of the stone will also deepen the colour, one of the reasons why bigger stones show the best colour.

cheers Jeff.
