Why Do Buyers Not Read?

Recommended Posts

Why do some buyers just not read the full ad & payment conditions?

Twice in the last few days I have had buyers doing a cash deposit without paying in the bank charges.....obviously when it is a substantial amount I usually will not worry about it but please, when it is R20 or R30 and the bank charges have not been included that means I am selling my items or R4 or so?

I understand that I could tell the buyers to deposit this amount before I post the items but then even if they pay the R15 owing for bank charges as I have on all my ads, I will still be - R1.50 seeing as the bank charges R16.50 - therefore they would need to basically redeposit the entire amount again for me to actually receive the money I am owed.

Is it worth the whole rigmarole which will probably result in a refund or some such thing?

This is just more than ridiculous, I do not put all these words in my ads because I am bored with nothing to do but simply because I would like these terms read & met.

People know how to look at pictures and push the "purchase" button and that's it. Some even question you on the R16.50 as if you are overcharging on postage and whatnot.

Now I usually rate my buyers once I have posted the items & as today is Tuesday, it was postage day & I thought to hell with it, let me just post these items that I sold for a whole R3.50 - however am I now to rate this person positive? I think I shall just pass for now & give no rating, and there is the answer to a question somebody was asking the other day on the forum as to why some sellers do not rate the buyers.

My sympathies dear.

Sangoma Art combined with Sangoma Sales Techniques gives rise to Sangoma Philosophy.

And so it shall be thus : " There are none so blind as those who will not read " - Voldermort (aka) Sam, Cape Town, 2012.

And such it is.

I shall send my envoy to collect the usual fee. The artwork, although not stated, carries the usual copyright.

Magnificent as it is, I am afraid it may not be reproduced. We can, however, offer it for sale to Bob. I shall

leave you to sort out the technicalities. (Hope Jade passed Selling Dodgy Art 101).

Sometimes I am not sure its "don't read" but "can't read". Yesterday I had a buyer who bought some blueberry seeds who was insistent that she never bought seeds but plants! Clearly stated in the title that its SEEDS and clearly in the listing it says "You are buying a 5 seed pack"

People are too lazy to read !! I have re-worked my wordings over & over to try & give as much info but with the least amount of words to read...well still have those that ask stupid questions, that short pay (Fees), that send me "rude" emails for my banking details eventhough I use BOB pay & Credit Card !! So ja I think it will always be this way and so bottom line you have to be hard at times and ask for the shortfall to be paid, including ANOTHER cash fee, because if you don't it just carries on... think of it this way...you are hopefully retraining them for future cash purchases!

the vast majority of people in SA are not trained in Internet as in other parts of the world , it will take years to get it right , not everyone uses a computer or needs to , and thus makes mistakes when eventually buying something over the web , the system is not allways right for all , your ( anyones ) simplistic way of thinking when doing a buy now may not make sense to many people , maybe a tick the box after purchasing needs to be implemented ,or tick many boxes before completing the purchase .as in yes/ no , next step .......

Head on over to your local casino and take a gander at the old folk spending their pension monies on the machines, some even know how to use the computer to see the stats on a specific machine. I can bet you most of them have no computer at home but are fast learners when money is involved.

In some of the cases we have on BoB, it's not always the newbies that are not reading the listings, but old hands too. We had an international Buyer with 100% rating get a neg against him because of just this, he did not read our terms and conditions and banking info and he was full of excuses, but hey we tried to accommodate him for over 20 odd days but he failed to meet the terms of the sale.

Methinks it is not always one being 'savvy' with the in's and out's of computers and the internet, it boils down to being lazy. Yes, once in a while one might see something that 'tickles their fancy' (thumbnail), bids and then reads (or not) the particulars in the auction listing.

Same can be said for a box of cereal on the supermarket shelf. Businesses pay 'bookoo' bucks for colorful and catchy packaging (display side) and the 'important' stuff is in fine print on the sides....magnifying glass required. A 'fancy' box of Whoop-O's could easily contain 5% arsenic and most people would buy it because it is appealing to the eye; "eye candy".

If Buyers cannot be 'bothered' to go 'beyond' the thumbnail before bidding, it really 'doesn't matter a hill of beans' how carefully, or how 'simple' a Seller words his / her Terms, Payment Options, Costs, when the only thing that 'functions' is the bidding finger.

New twist: Item in question titled: FREE SHIPPING (name of item). Potential Buyer sends message via Q&A: "How much is shipping? I live in South Africa."

Methinks sometimes there is no 'right' way in a 'wrong' way world.

You guys should look at the positive side. Your ads and pics are so great they get frenzied fingers and slaveringly hang over the "buy" button. Do some of that hazy shite one sees where you wonder if the &&*RARE*&&***COLLECTIBLE*** outoffocusandtakenatthewronganglesoyoucantseethe*a*Iamselling vase that lost its dignity when it was manufactured, is actually an ashtray. This means you read the fine print. Postage anywhere in South Africa R200. That stops them. Right after that part is where you put "Add 16-50 for cash deposit" and whispering "No, I did NOT call you an illiterate overpassionate idiot"

Why Do Sellers Not Reply To Questions?

Especially for those of us who are new to the Bid or Buy "rigmarole", as Voldermort terms it, we need assistance, we need to be spoken with - regarding procedures as much as regarding items sold. I have posted three questions -- and have never received a reply. A case, I guess, of "the customer is always wrong"; and "Just send your money and I'll get back to you when I have the time".

I cannot fathom why ANY Seller would put ANY question, sent via Q&A, 'on the back burner of ignore'. Yes, there may be a delay in replying: holiday, family emergency, power outage, interrupted internet service, a few hours or even a day 'offline' preparing and posting parcels or even a time difference (7 - 8 hour time difference between the USA and SA), but if a Buyer takes a moment out of THEIR busy schedule to ask a question, a 'responsible' Seller should / would take a moment out of THEIR busy schedule to answer the inquiry.... even if that answer is 'long after' when the question was asked.

Given the time difference, I have, more times than I can count, answered an inquiry from a Buyer AFTER an auction closed (Snap Friday is a good example), apologizing for and giving the reason why the delay. Just because I couldn't be 'Johnny-on-the-spot' and answer an inquiry within nano-seconds of being asked, that doesn't mean I, as a Seller, can ignore that inquiry....even after the auction has closed. I feel that Buyer is owed the respect of my replying, even if 'late'.

I can think of quite a few reasons why some questions are never answered - and here are just a few, all real questions & all on my questions page:

1. Voldemort - this may be unorthodox, but you seem like knowledgeable guy - I am trying to find some kind of reference work to determine the worth of some of my stamps, to no avail - can you advise on the value of some of my stamps if I e-mail you pictures and details? I may have something of value which Ill be willing to sell at a reduced/bargain price

sure, I will send my email address out to complete strangers, no problem at all

2.

hi would u be able to giv eme a call thanks shaun xxxxxxxxxx (I have added the x, the number is there on my page - plain as day)

Why would I be phoning you or anybody else I don't know

3.

naand meneer ek het talle van die seels maar hulle is in serilasie gwees bma eritrea and ba tripolitania m.a.l pleas can you advice

If anybody at all can make head or tail of what this person is saying, please let me know

4.

Hello. I inherited a stamp, FDC, stamp and stamp sheet collection but dont know too much about it. I have recently become ill and have time to look at them. I would like to find out more about it and try sell some on bid or buy. Would you be interested in having a look at them and helping me? Thank you.

Sure, I will do so with my x-ray eyes that see through computer screens

5.

Hi, could you kindly let me know the size of each carpet? Are they wall hangings or can you put them on the floor? Are they washable? What would the postage cost to Port Alfred (Eastern Cape) be?

Now this is my all time favourite, this insane question was asked for a set of 4 stamps

I have quite a few others as well, however I'm sure these 5 will be sufficient to enlighten you as to why some questions simply do remain unanswered.

Have a wonderful day now.

Absolutely no idea, & even after they purchase from me some still ask me "are you really a woman, and you are selling all these items", they must get a hell of a shock when they see my FB picture then ........one of my real favourites was about a month or so after I started on BoB (but alas the question is no longer visible) was a person asking me a question & his opening words were "Hey voldie how's it hanging" you could have knocked me over with a feather
