Hello Beyers

I am the person who sold you the (bad) catalogue.

At the moment the whole world stamp market is in turmoil (to be a little bit dramatic). Some items do not fetch 10% of the catalogue value while others sell for way over catalogue value. This is true for most major catalogues, be it specific Country Catalogues, Gibbons, Michel, Scott, etc. Any catalogue is simply the editor’s opinion. Prices vary tremendously between the various mentioned catalogues.

At the moment, Southern Africa varieties are very much in demand as many collectors realise (correctly in my opinion) that there is more to collecting than simply duplicating the catalogue.

Make up your own mind, read a lot, be patient and use your common sense – you will build up a quality collection in no time.

The forum is filled with various collectors / dealers. Most of them are specialists in their specific fields. So just ask if you need any advice.

Regards

Jacques

Hi there Jacques,

Thanks for the advice! Suppose I have to start somewhere, regardless if the catalogue is bad or not. I'll shout in the forums if I need help with anything though.

Kind regards,

Beyers

Another Newby to Philatelics

Hi from Danne,

I am also new to this forum. I too have a large stamp inheritance and in need of assistance sorting it out.

I have a large collection of British, Arabic, and European stamps. Still trying to figure out the Arabic stamps which is taking some time!

I have FDCs but need help with the following:

1. FDC. Do these all have docs inside envelopes?

2. What is the difference between FDC and First date of issue?

3. It is just the stamp and cancellations that are most important or also the overall condition of the envelope.

Obviously age of FDC counts but some of the envelopes didn't seem to stand the test of time as well as the stamps!

Any help would be greatly appreciated

:hm:

Hi Danne

welcome to the forum.

1. not all FDCS have docs inside

2. the difference is that a FDC is a special envelope with a special fdcancellation and first day of issue is any cancellation of the first day of issue of the stamp - any kind of envelope or on the stamp alone

3. many influencing factors depending on age of cover and of course the condition - newer one's the condition is most important, the older one's do not depend only on the condition

best of luck with the sorting

Thank you Voldermot for your help.

What I am still trying to learn, a lot of people have already learnt and forgotten, so please bear with me and juggle the "old" brain cells.

Are there catalogues, books, web sites that I can access to find out more about FDC's? All help is Greatly Appreciated.:wondering:

SA, SWA, Rhodesia & Homelands I would suggest purchasing a SACC to help you to begin, (there are a wide variety of books/catalogues but this is what I would recommend to start with) this will help give you a rough idea of prices, does not necessarily have to be the latest, merely just a guide to give you some idea of prices - for the other countries try purchasing some of the catalogues of the countries you are interested in, again does not have to be the latest. There are also websites you could try eg: http://www.stanleygibbons.com and quite a few others.

Have you had a look for any catalogues at your local library........

Good luck

Hi all,

Please call my Joan. It is so nice to read all the notes from old and new members. I also have learnt a lot the past 4 months since I started with stamp collecting. I have collected 1000's of stamps from all over the world, but my passion now is COGH, Union of SA and RSA up to 2000. It can be a very expensive hobby but I'm getting there. Can the bobbers from Cape Town please give me some info on auctions in the near future (not that I will attend all of them).

Hi all

Hi all

By way of introduction I am Grant Sboros that is my real name. Been collecting stamps for 22 years introduced by dad at the age of 9. So you can do the maths and calculate my age. I collect anything and everything but my interests lie with anything that is scarce and uncommon. Varieties and and classic items are what I focus on. I dont sell stamps just buy them. I just love stamps and they are my passion, I can never have enough of them. I have enjoyed BOB over the last two so years and it has good variety and good bargains most of the time. Stamps provide me with a way of satifying my passion and if done well with what I believe to be a great investement as well. Thanks

Hi Grant and welcome..

Looking at it, I haven't even done this myself, so here goes..

Hi,

My name is Fred.. Basically what I do is I sell Computers, Laptops and their parts and ship them away.

I started this business at the end of last year and run it in my spare time (I'm a 3rd year Bcom Management Accounting student down here in Stellenbosch) - Yes, I am 20, I have been hiding it on the forums, because sometimes I feel you older folk look down on us young ones..

Have a great day..

Fred

Welcome, Grant. Hope your stay with the forum will be a long and happy one.

And welcome, Fred, although you're part of the forum "gang" already! Don't let your age bother you - you're not that much younger than most other posters. There are only a couple of us in our dotage! I promise.

Hello Grant

Welcome to the Stamp Forum.

I am sure that classics, varieties and “that something different” type of items are the items that will always be in demand.

I think that I have met your father once – way back in 1995 when I was dealing at the Randburg Waterfront.

Keep well and regards

Jacques

ATA STAMP CENTRE

HI ALL

This thread has been around awhile but this is first i have seen it-Do i need any introduction?I am Neil and i sell lots of quality stamps 99% starting at R1 so the buyer can decide what he wishes to pay. This month is the 3rd anniversary of my selling stamps on BOB having taken a sabbatical from the human rat race at the age of 50 after the loss of my eldest son 3 years ago in a motor vehicle accident-Having sold my business as i lost interest and needed to be at home with the wife i started selling some of my collection to supplement my income but i have got so involved that this has become a full time business to me-Fortunately so as it helped me cope with my loss by staying busy and i was able to stay at home to look after the wife and still maintain my stamp sales on bob-As i have always been in retail i strive for excellent service and quality and honesty in all my dealings with clients and these ethics have served me well with my venture on bob.I am very happy with bob as it is a great site and provided me with an opportunity that i did not imagine would work so well.My thanks and compliments to the bob team and also to all the stamp buyers and friends i have made over the last few years as all bar one or two unpleasant characters are wonderful people to deal with.I have made this into a very successful business and i hope it may continue for many more years.I wish all success to all other sellers on bob no matter what you sell-IF you conduct your business in an honest and ethical manner you will be successful!!

JACQUES stop soliciting business on the forum.Making it a condition of joining the forum to purchase from you indeed!!!great idea though.

Thats my story as to why and how i started selling stamps on bob

Hello Ansa

Welcome to the Stamp Forum

I agree with you about the people. At least half of my current house friends circle consists of people that I have met through my stamp dealing. Some I have known for twenty years or more….

I know that I can get a couple of negative ratings tomorrow (touch wood!), but it is amazing how considerate, tolerant and friendly the average stamp buyer / seller on BidorBuy is. I really think that we as stamp sellers and stamp buyers are very fortunate.

Jacques

Hi Jacques,

Thank you for welcome me on the stamp forum , as you mentioned about your ratings, yes we all try our best , but I feel that honesty is the most importand factor in building a seller , buyer relation and that is the foundation for lasting friendship. Many inexperienced buyers buy from sellers with good ratings trusting their experience and judgement and that is how we all learn from each other.

Thanking You

Ansa
