Did NGC grade this coin correctly???

Please have a look at the following graded coin:

 

1894 ZAR 2 Shilling AU58

 

i do not have all the grading experience, but cannot see that this coin is even close to a XF grade.

 

What went wrong with the largest grading firm in the world here???

All humans make mistakes... NGC does however offer to purchase the coin from you at market price or they will find you a coin and replace yours.....

 

But any grader can make an error - they only human!

I do understand all graders make mistakes, but this seems to be a massive mistake.

 

Showing this photo to one of the more knowledgable collectors the grade was given as VF-

 

This is not good. Any massive mistakes like this seen by other grading companies?

Yes all Grading companies can make mistakes - BUT NGC is prepared to pay for their mistakes.......

You have to remember that those guides are written by normal eBay members and there is no form of copy editing or fact checking.

I have commented on this "error" before, where NGC grades a R5 coin medallic alignment. All our modern coins are medallic aligned or medal struck. Looking at this listing I've noticed two coins graded this way. The graders are obviously not familiar with South African coins.

An assigned grade can still be debated, but this kind of mistake (twice!) is a bit iffy.
