Hi.

I got this in a bunch of coins i bought. It is a 1977 R1, looks like it was gold plated and covered in this red resin like stuff.

I just want to know if something like this have value or is it just a pretty shiny "thing"

Thanks

Beware of these coins ...

The problem with these types of enamelled or painted “art-work” coins of the RSA is that they are actually unlawful to own and sell as the SA Mint regards them as mutilated coins.

In legal terms, they are unsellable.

"mutilated" - "unsellable " - "unlawful to own and sell".... Sutch hard words for what I would call a "true peace of art"

Whoever did this... Knows what he's doing. I would certenly buy something like this... Not for my collection but just coz it's so nice.. and rare.

I've seen coins that have been "cut out". Take the old 1c (or 1/2c) coins with the ship on them, they cut out the "air" and silvercoated the ship.

Looked excellent.

What makes these so bad?

I think it's regarded as "defacing" our currency which is a criminal offence in SA.
