Estimates on coins melted

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am wondering if anyone has some figures or good estimates on ZAR and Union coins that were melted. I have an old catalogue that lists some melted numbers for ZAR coin years but nothing on Union. Did the SA mint officially melt some Union/ZAR coins at a time? Are there any records available? I also believe that many low grade silver coins may end in the melting pot with the current high silver price, which is very unfortunate. Regards Andreas
