When is the Colour of a Coin Unnatural ??

Recommended Posts

Hello Collectors,

This numismatic hobby is one of rare beauty and that is often the spark that keeps the fire of our passion going.

I have had this 1932 Halfcrown passed through NGC and PCGS with both companies refusing to grade it because of "Unnatural Colour"

We all know that the Copper component of Silver gives a variety of shades and gives to the metal silver attractive colours that make many coins unique.

We also know that coins have been doctored in various ways to bring out attractive colours and that artificial treatment needs to be identified by the third party grading company and excluded from accepted numismatics.

Third party graders are the corner stone of numismatics and without them we would not have an objective basis for evaluation. This posting in no ways pretends to diminish their standing. We all need them and they do an excellent job.

It is of interest though to use pictures to show what could be just very nice toning that is regarded as over the top. Some pics of a 1958 Brown Penny are also shown - it was a present and eventhough a duplicate, I treasure it as an example of how nice copper can get whatwith the differing pressures and heat used in striking Proofs that may favour production of pigmentary byproducts.

Regards

Geejay

I would agree that the 1932 2/6 does not look like any other SA silver coin I have seen, but I doubt that it was "doctored". The reason for this is that there either zero or a minimal premium versus a "white" coin.

Hi Collectors,

Here is another very attractive and Unc ZAR 1892 Penny that was rejected as unnaturally toned by NGC.

I think the graders may have a point here.

Hi Collectors,

Here is a Penny that was acceptable to the graders and graded MS64. It has a striped and spotty black pattern that is unusual to copper.

Hello Colectors,

Here is a German East Africa Half Rupie 1913J (mtge 200,000) that was rejected by NGC for unnatural toning.

Its a scarce coin (Nil graded NGC & PCGS) and had an orange colour overall. By using Silverbrite (Pick n Pay), I removed the colour without affecting the lustre and left a normal looking coin behind. One only needs to dip and wipe gently with one's fingers (Eli Levine -'as gently as you wipe a baby's bottom')

Dont give up when NGC rejects. The coin may be salvageable.
