Hi All,

This has been discussed before, there are measures in place for security to pick up shill bidding on discreet items. Should you suspect shill bidding, please send an email to communitywatch@bidorbuy.co.za or click on the "spot a problem" link in the item.

Thank you.

Now that is something I wouldn't like to use - too hot, I suspect! These are the most hilarious chillies anyone has ever produced, though!

I have also listed discreet items in the coins section in the past, but I try not to do it any more. I have seen on more than one occasion that a certain prominent seller list a slabbed coin as discreet and then sold it on R1 auction, but after close of auction, the exact same slabbed coin turns up for sale by the exact same seller (if the price realized was not high enough). Although Admin wants me to report this specific seller, the problem is that we all do business with each other at the end of the day. So, I instead try to shy away from discreet auctions as you do not really know what is happening behind closed curtains.

My diet tablets are listed under discreet items. Nobody wants the world to know they are using it.

One main reason I would use discreet is to proctect the buyer's (my client) information. In the past I have had random users (no names mentioned) ask me : " on 12 Feb you sold a coin to _____, please can I ask you for their contact information" or " please ask that client of yours if they are interested my coin like that"!! Terrible i know!

Another reason : if you are selling a coin or lot that a dealer may buy and want to resell.

I have also had high profile Clients ask me to change listings to discreet before they bid or buy....

Shill bidding is a problem, discreet listings are still visible to bidorbuy and I believe they have a good system in place to identify shill bidders...

Excuse my ignorance

But if somebody is willing to pay a certain price for a coin ( within his or hers budget) they will pay

The "shill" bidder will try to "up" that price and may or may not at all times succeed and may in fact cost the "client" he is working for more money, I think I have never sold on bid or buy yet

How do we know that the person bidding is not his wife, son, cousin, secretary, aunt - or him- himself using those credentials, I would not think it would be hard - in fact rather easy seeing the login process, and the inability to work out connections between people, sure one could use ip addresses etc. but that is just a simple check and im sure bidorbuy work with more, hell the best intelligence agency in the world would have poblems

Removing the discreet option wont solve that, I personally don't like discreet bidding - wrong or right I feel a certain amount of confidence, bidding if I can see the people I am bidding against and their history, even though I don't know them - If it is a discreet bid I will base my decision on the sellers

What might be an option - is to make that bidding become discreet after the sale i.e. discreet history , should there be a reason for it? . the info will still be available to bidorbuy

But if one chooses to be discreet I agree there should be a premium either paid or something lost , and no rating for that sale is probably a good option

bidorbuy regularly monitors shill bidding. We have other ways to identify it not just IP. However, it can be very difficult to ascertain if someone has a personal relationship with another user. This will not be obvious no matter what steps are in place.
