A while back a MS61 sold for R15000.00. Now you can pick them up for under R1000.00. Lots of controversy surround this coin, plenty of threads to read.

According to the South Africa Coin Company website, another 2000 5R PF-69 UCAM sold for R200,000 at some point in the past. So this sale represents a decrease of 57.5% from that one, which may or may not have been a record for this coin.

 

In any event, both prices are completely absurd because the coin is not remotely scarce, there is no significant difference between these coins and others which are one or even two grades lower and there are literally thousands of better alternatives available for the same or even much less money.

 

Given how common this coin is except as a "conditional" rarity, it is easily in the running for the title of the most overpriced coin in the world. It shares that "distinction" with the 2008 90th Birthday 5R and selective "conditional" rarity "moderns" from the United States.
