Great to see that your having some success Morne.

Job well done.

Its appreciates,

Maybe BOB should have a small block on the Auction site which mentions how many "scamsters" have been caught,

with a link to a forum thread like this which gives their user names.

Everytime one is nailed their name gets added.

Might deter a few from them from trying.

Hi

Thanks however unfortunately there are a lot of laws around doing things like that and this is the only way we could do it for now

However there are a few more cases that are hopefully coming to an end soon that I will add

This is also just to show users not to just leave it when they are scammed but to go and open a case and let it be investigated and hopefully we will have more successes like this

Thanks

It makes me proud of you all! I know it takes guts to go on and on untill there is a conviction and not to give up because you think it is not worth the time and money.

Thank you and congratulations!

Thanks, however we need users to open cases against fraudsters and not just leave it

Yes it does take time for the investigations to be concluded but it would be the only way we can show these people we serious

Hi All

The two year investigation and court proceedings into the user GoodsForAfrica has returned a positive judgment.

The commercial crimes court found him guilty of Fraud and handed him a 4 year

sentence

This shows that even though it is a lengthy process some good can come from it

Scammers

maybe there should be stricter rules for joining Bob and a registration fee, that would deter some more scamsters.

futher action to be taken by bob

what about the same for the seller 'stappies', many of us have paid for items and have been forwarded false tracking numbers etc by this seller

i have some info on this chap, like address etc, yet bob will not furnish his id number, contact details etc, surely if bob can see there are problems with a particular seller, they should allow the relevant information on these sellers out to the buyers that have been 'scammed' for use of the police?, bob insists that i must on opening a thieft case at the police station....and you know that they are to busy for such 'small' cases like this...before this info will be released to the police only

plkease advise if there is anybody out there with more info on this 'Johan Stapelberg' aka 'STAPPIES'

Unfortunately you have to open a case with the police. Our legal obligation is to release this information to the police, we cannot release it to a user as per our policy. As you are the one that paid money to the person, you have to open the case, we cannot do it for you as we did not pay any money nor are we the seller. These are the procedures that need to take place. Unless you open a case we cannot assist you. Once the case is opened we can then assist the police in the investigation.

Thank you

Cuan

Is there no way that you can implement stricter rules to joining as a seller or buyer? Perhaps new members must fax through a copy of their id and have to provide you with a physical address and land line number which you can verify before accepting them. I report suspicious sellers all the time but this is mostly over weekends. By the time community watch disables a seller the bid already closed and in many cases the buyer probably already transferred the money. There must be a better way!

Unfortunately this is not possible, even if all this information is forwarded to us we have no way of physically verifying the person. Anyone can answer a phone and claim to be someone, we also cannot send people out to verify addresses, I am not aware of any business or bank that does this. People can open accounts with banks with valid details but this could have been as a result of ID theft or impersonation, I can assure you the banks cannot even validate the FICA documents or guarantee the identity of an account holder. There is also a time factor and cost when verifying someone - this can take up to 2 weeks in some instances and costs in the region of R100 per verification, this delays the process and the cost will have to be borne by someone, like the buyer or seller.

Generally speaking, we always say that the following: "Buyer beware" and if it's too good to be true, then it probably is. Read the safety tips before bidding, if you are suspicious or unsure report it, let us check them out first and DON'T make payment, especially on a weekend, that's what they are counting on... payment can wait til Monday or until we can get some information from them. Ultimately the responsibility or decision rests with the user, we can implement the strictest measures possible, but fraudsters will always find a way, however, using common sense and waiting a day or two can save you a lot of trouble and inconvenience.

We don't want to impose barriers of entry onto our users, this not only causes an inconvenience for the legitimate users (cost and time) but also will result in less people using the site. 99% of the people using the site are honest and will register valid information, there will always be the few who make it unpleasant for the rest. At the end of the day even with stricter measures and verification we have no way of knowing or guaranteeing that a seller will send the item. If you follow the safe trading tips and use common sense, then the chances of something going wrong are minimal.

Kind regards

Cuan

Am really impressed with the way the Bid or Buy team take note of our "problems". Thanks, team.
