Valuations

Recommended Posts

pepper007

Hi

I'm new to the whole gem-collecting thing - going through the various posts regarding certificates and Gemval valuations etc I'm starting to get verrry nervous :(

Is there anywhere I can learn more online regarding valuations without actually consulting a specialist?

Regards

pepper

Hi Pepper

Welcome to the Gemstone forum. You are most welcome and will be well looked after by the locals. Valuations are a minefield so I really want to leave that area to Lukeness and more experienced experts. I am sure Luke will post soon.

In the mean time If you want to post links to some items that you are unsure of value, that would be a great way to start learning. Also there are loads of good online articles to start with - have a read of this one http://www.danielprince.co.uk/How_To_Buy_a_Gem.html

Brian

Hi Pepper,

Welscome. And thanks Gems Direct for the introduction. lol

All the posters here have great information to share and are willing to help.

Valuations can be tricky as there are so many variables and possible pitfalls. What types of stones are you interested in?

hi, I would advise you not to take the valuations seriously, source out similar stones on various websites to get some idea, Gemval relies 100% on the input from the person who is selling the stone....not an idependant....hence very unreliable.

As Brian and Luke mentioned, if in doubt , place a link in here, and people will advise you

regards Jeff.

Thanks to you all for being so kind and willing to advise, really appreciated

I only really started to panic about buying based on seller's valuations after reading the forum ... LOL

I adore sapphires and tourmalines and of course bought quite a few diamonds (I can ask my jeweller for advice on these). I've only been on for a couple of months but have bought literally hundred's already ... (got a great husband!) This started because we have 2 daughters (30 & 5 .. don't ask ) and 2 daughter's-in-law so thought it would be a great source of sparklies for presies, now I'm hooked and want to set my little one up with some sparklies as a part of her trust fund.

I've been looking at gemstone.org for basic info but wanted to find out if there was any other site that could help on the valuation side.

Kind regards

Cali Craft and Gems

Hi Pepper

The only reason it shows on your side and to no-one else is that it is a personal offer.

Send me an email or PM with the seller's name and item description and I'll find the correct link for you.

Cali Craft

Very nice. Great price.

However, if I were you I would ask what it would cost for a Gem Report (certificate) stating that the stone's location and proff of copper content. The cost to you would be more than worth it.

True Paraiba Tourmaline (Cuprite Elbaite from Brazil) commands a massive premium over Mozambican or Nigerian "Paraibe type" Tourmaline so location is all important.

It should also be noted that there is currently research being conducted on the African material as some have suggested that copper is being diffused into the stones to give false readings.

For now, always insist that a immersion test is conducted under magnification to look for any surface treatments.

I must add that I have always found this seller to be completely honest and open and as far as full disclosure to the best of his knowledge goes.

Thanks Lukeness

I thought it was a beautiful stone and a good price too ... then again what do I know? LOL

I also like the seller, bought quite a few things from him and he's lekker). I'll definitely enquire about a certificate, this one is definitely one for the trust fund babe!

I read a couple of things about the whole Paraiba thing, ... probably in the forum ... you lot are great and I've certainly had a chuckle at some of the posts

Hi Pepper

Glad that you are enjoying the forum and having a chuckle. I guess that you noticed that we get real upset with the Burmese Ruby saga and hope that you have now some grasp of the minefield out there.

It would be great for you to post more items here for us to have a look at. There are many honest sellers out there that deserve the business.

Regards

Brian

Not a bad stone. Assume glass-filling as with most Madagascar rubies and sapphires.

The tourmalines look great and still a very good price.

Take no notice of my bid value as I have lots of stones I source myself so don't often spend high on BoB.

Thanks for your reply Lukeness, as usual much appreciated

Which rubies are the best to collect? I'm not particularly crazy about them, so wouldn't put them into jewellery.

Off to the tourmalines we go ...

this one is my absolute favourite ... but it might look like I'm currying favour ... LOL

By the way, do let me know when to stop ... I won't be offended!

On a different note, no pick of the week

Haven't done picks this week as I'm actually on leave: Going to Plett tomorrow.

Anyone is welcome to post their own favourites too.

Most people who know Spinel regard them as the most under-rated of stones. They're great.

Good red and Blue can be extremely pricey.

hi pepper007,

Firstly, please keep the questions coming, people in this Forum are here to help.

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=8717233

As Luke states, it is also my opinion, that this seller is one of the best sellers on this site, full disclosure in their listings and some very nice stones!

However, I believe this is Indicolite Tourmaline and not copper bearing Paraiba.... but still looks a very nice stone

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=8880906

fracture filled for sure, but in defense of the seller, he/she does indirectly state that - ie - heated , treated....bit of a cop-out, but at least it's a start!

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/jsp/item/Item.jsp?Trade_TradeId=8870557

not bad looking stones ... but small !

Regarding Spinel, as Luke states, it really is the stone of the moment, with prices soaring, especially good pinks and reds, blues are also in high demand, especially in the States. I won't comment on my own stones, because I do not believe in promoting sales in this Forum, that's not why i am here!

Still with spinel, check the link below

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/8941882/JUST_JEWELS_HOT_PINK_SPINEL_1_10_Ct.html

in my opinion,if the photos are accurate, which I am sure they are, this is an awesome stone, and one of the best currently listed on BOB!... the colour and luster are premium for Spinel, do not be put off by the small size... this is a bargain!

regards Jeff.

Good morning Jeff

Thanks for the encouragement! 'Tis appreciated and as a result, I've ordered a book, signed up for a gem course ... all cool banana's! Now have a scale and a loupe LOL

As far as the spinels are concerned, I love them ... the array of colours are exciting aren't they!

Is there anything specific I need to be careful of with regards to buying Spinel - (some for jewellery for the girls and some to keep as a collection for the little one).

I certainly would like to resell at some stage but not until I know what I'm talking about.

What do you think about this one?

looks like a reasonable stone, but the valuation is ridiculous!!

36,887 rand = nearly $5000 US dollars....trouble is , some people actually believe it!! ........ come on man! get real!!

as for reselling stones , you need to be at source!!

Jeff.

Hi Jeff

Again, thanks ... feel like a bit of a *** for trusting the valuations

What is the realistic value for this?

As for reselling, meant the ones I don't want to keep! Will definitely leaving the serious selling to clever guys like you!!!

Regards

Pepper

I can not give a valuation on this, without actually seeing the stone. ie - in my hand, blue sapphire this colour are expensive. Starting price at 1 rand, gets my head spinning? I can't really comment more than that!

regards Jeff
