Hey BumbleBee you forgot to mention in your listing that you don't mind if others want to use your photo, (which is lovely by the way), in their listings... :P

Thanks for the laugh!!

Absolutely brilliant listing.

Hopefully those that are trying to take advantage of the unsuspecting public will get the message, but I doubt it.

Well, what I was planning to do was delete the bids if anyone does place one but my wife has told me if anyone does bid she will make me take their money! :D

Hmmm, it appears that someone doesn't want me to become stinking rich. My listing has been deleted  Will someone please give me a reason please?

Well admin,

1. BoB deleted this listing because they felt like it? Come on, seriously?

2. This was not a test auction.

3. the intention was not to mislead, everything in this listing was upfront and factual.

Perhaps the sellers of these particular coins took offence and put pressure on BoB to remove the listing? Well, I take offence to my listing being deleted without reason or warning. What about the fellow who used my photos in "his" listing? Why was that not deleted? It was reported to CW and I had this thread open on the forum?

Wow! 50 coins in sequence! :o Now there is something you don't see everyday.

Just out of curiosity, can anyone tell me what these coins were selling for when this craze started? It would really be interesting to see what people have been spending on MS66 birthday coins over the last 2 years. I'm wondering when more of the 5000 "rare" proof birthday coins will start surfacing in mass.

I've also been suckered into buying some of these, the lowest I've paid was R95, but as I recall these things were selling in the thousands of rands when this whole story stared.

Found this article on BoB.......

Is it legal to sell the Mandela 90th birthday R5 coins? Is it illegal? Or could it be – just a little legal?

The biggest mystery about the 2008 Mandela coin, also known as the 90th birthday coin, is not why anyone would want to pay more than R5 for a coin that is worth exactly R5. The biggest mystery about the 2008 Mandela R5 coin is – how is it possible that no one in the South African Reserve Bank saw it coming? After all, there have been precedents: the precedent of the 1994 Mandela Presidential Inauguration R5 coin, as well as the precedent of the 2000 Mandela R5 coin.

Against such background, it was to be expected that the new 90th birthday Mandela coin will end up on bidorbuy and other trading places. And yet, the veritable trading frenzy that has been unleashed on 18 July 2008, the date the coin was released, seems to have taken the authorities by surprise.

Truth to be told, the frantic trading surprised the bidorbuy people too. “As far as I am concerned, the 2008 Mandela coin is worth R5,” says bidorbuy Managing Director Andy Higgins. “It is not an investment coin. On the other hand, bidorbuy firmly believes in the freedom of trading in all legal items, and if people are willing to pay more than R5 for the coin, I don’t see why they should not be allowed to do so.”

Even though the Mandela R5 coin is certainly legal, a phone call from the South African Reserve Bank made bidorbuy change its stand a little. At one point, the bidorbuy staff was instructed to close all 2008 Mandela coin listings. Then a compromise between the somewhat vague concerns expressed by the South African Reserve Bank and bidorbuy’s own policy was reached: bidorbuy sellers were informed that that may list smaller quantities of the coin at a time, at their own risk. However, listing an unopened bag containing 400 or 500 coins would definitely not be tolerated.

The “at their own risk” part of the message stems from the Reserve Bank’s caution that people who trade in 2008 Mandela coins may come under the stern scrutiny of the law, especially if they trade in large quantities

The bidorbuy Coins and Notes community is abuzz with speculations. The traders are doubtlessly rubbing their hand. As one forum member pointed out, “controversy breeds collectability, and all this will just make the coins more sought after.”

As for bidorbuy, it will stick to its policy of allowing listings of a reasonable quantity of the 2008 Mandela R5 coins on the site, at least until further, more definite instructions from the authorities are received. bidorbuy will also, at its own discretion, cooperate with authorities in case of an investigation into how this or that seller came into possession of the coins.

In the meantime, the message from bidorbuy and their expert coin dealers is: the 2008 Mandela coins are not investment coins. More than two million of them was released into circulation, and a circulation coin is considered somewhat rare only when there are fewer than a thousand of them. True, some exceptionally well-done samples of a circulation coin, graded and number-proofed by a reputable firm, may be valuable. However, that is an involved issue, best left to the experts. The chances of such a 2008 Mandela coin landing into the hands of a man in the street is about equal to the chances of winning the grand lottery prize.

The last line in this article has me puzzled, seems that the chances of winning the lotto are getting better by the day :D

Move aside Keats

Aaahhh but Lily, Bumblee Bee

The impressive NGC Slabs holding the humble Mandela coins make the expense worth while!

I guess we are paying for the "impression of value"... but the question is "How much are you willing to pay for that honour?"

Here is a poem I have written in honour of our new entrepeneurs and their misleading listings...

This is MS70 and no hand has touched my skin

Unblemished I am, untouched by even a pin

This is MS69 rarely beaten in a full coin keg

But just a tiny, tiny scratch brings me down a peg

This is MS68 a few more imperfections but still with the very best

Despite this I am not with the perfection of MS70 blessed

This is MS67 – you are now understanding the tale

A few more tiny nicks have left me further down the scale

This is MS66 the nicks can now be clearly seen

Oh how I would love to have retained MS70’s perfect sheen!

This is MS65 and my high spots have just started to wear

Unless I’m ultra rare people are no longer starting to care.

This is MS64 and hands have touched my blemished face

This and a few scratches have put me in my place.

This is MS63 and now many scratches are starting to appear

Despite this if I was a Mandela Birthday coin I am now being called rare

This is MS62 and my fine detail is now becoming quite impaired

Yet the claims of my rarity in listings makes me feel quite scared.

This is MS61 and I only just make the UNC

In reality, unless I am a Veldpond, I am just a clunk

This is MS60 and because of handling all my fine details are now lost

Yet if I am a Mandela you might pay for me through your nose – at your own cost!

This is a worn AU59 and I can’t believe what I hear

Move aside MS70 they claim I am more dear!

This is AU58 and nothing less has been slabbed to date

So I must be ultra rare or someone wants you to take the bait!

….

Waiting for the ultra-ultra rare Mandela VG to be listed on this site

Imagining all the Mandela coins being ground down day and night;

I wonder who will be the first to make this impressive find

As a new generation of collectors are robbed blind!
