Suggest you post a little larger pics?

It is rather difficult to see the detail on any of these coins. Maybe post one or two larger pics at a time and you may get some responses?

Roman coins

They are all Roman coins - looks like three denarri and the rest are bronzes. All are later roman era issues from say 200AD to approx. 400AD. Its difficult to identify because of the small pics but the second one from the left (top row) is Julia Domna, (wife of Septimus Severus and mother of Caracella and Geta) See Spink 515. Overall condition looks really nice.

Roman Coins

Hopefully someone else with enough time will be able to help you, but I only quickly scanned through the coins.

It is sometimes very easy and other times fairly difficult to identify the exact emperors.

The first coin, a silver Denarius, is not a Julia Domna as I have thought but either a Denarius of Julia Maesa, a sister of Julia Domna, or Julia Mamaea, mother of Severus Alexander, murdered in 235 AD.

Catalogue value in VF is about R750 for these type of coins but rare verities exsits. There is not a big market in SA for these coins and you will probably get R200 - R300 on BoB.

The other coins are from late Roman emperors like Constantine, Gratian, Julian etc. (bronzes of these emperors sells for about R100 on BoB but scarcer issues will obviously influence the price).

Sorry I cannot be of more help

Regards

Pierre

I'm not very familiar with Roman coins at all except that I know that some of them are very scarce and many more are not. There are so many of them.

I do not know if you will find your coins, but you can check on the Heritage Rare Coin Galleries and Teletrade archives for prior sales. Teletrade ocassionally has had small blocks of this type of coin sold which were graded by ICG.

Another comment I would make is that the catalogue value may not be representative of market value at all. This is frequently true of coins listed in the US Krause world coin manual, especially for South Africa.

R700 or about $100 USD seems pretty steep to me to pay for a VF of this type unless the coin is rather scarce. I see that you appear to have some nicer coins than that, but I would not be interested in buying this type of coin in VF at all. I would rather buy the few better coins I see in higher grades even if I had to pay more.
