Calling all true collectors - A South African Collectors Society

Recommended Posts

ZARBOY

Hi All

I have been working on something like this for the past 14 months. Website designs are almost complete. The site would only serve coins and only south african coins.

It is a site for collectors and has a online valuation on graded coins. This might not be collectors values but is a market price guide(taken from available sales). few problems is that the market prices are so incorrect that I had to relook our pricing model. If a few Birthday coins sell for crazy prices, can that now be the market value? Strictly it is....

Will post more as soon as completed. Hope to finish at end July 2010

All this is planned to be free of charge.

Regards

Hello all Collectors,

Thanks for your big response to this issue.

I need a few core issues sorted out for such a society to work.

1) What criteria to use to invite membership?

2) Security of a proposed website - only members must have access - the title of the website sancs.co.za has been accessed for this purpose.

3) Details of planned get togethers must remain for members only. This will prevent gate crashing and improve safety of collector's items at the venue.

5)I have no problem with the name as SOUTH AFRICAN NUMISMATIC SOCIETY on the understanding that it caters for collectors of coins, tokens and medallions.

6)The election of a chairman and his term of office. I suggest that be decided by vote at the first get together. In the meantime I will offer my services as a stand in chairman.

Hi Georg

Please consider the membership fee which is reasonable. The professional society I belong to. fees was somethinglike R60/ annum three years back. Then it had to increase to nearly 7 times to keep the society keep going. Of course ,we are getting much better values. There is always relation between value and cost even it is not linear always. It is not a charity organization. It will cost. Starting with a very low fees, than increase suddenly may cause unnecessary talk around.

One can also think of allocating life membership provided constitution allows.

ALSO Website be built in a way that even unpaid member can not access the secure site of the website.

Muhammad, that is a super friendly gesture from your side. Almost unheard of in today's world where only the larger sports (soccer, rugby, motorsport etc.) and hobbies are attracting any sponsorships.

I have said this many times on this forum - that if you are not a true collector by heart (collecting coins in our instance) then you will never be a good or successful numismatic investor or even dealer.

Whatever, the problem I forsee is that we cannot share personal information on this forum to connect and start up the organization.

So regarding my question above "How do we proceed from here"? - maybe the BoB-team can advise us what we can and cannot share here to start this up. For example, would it be OK if I send you a personal message (or someone else send me one) regarding ideas we might have how to start up a Coin Collectors Society in South Africa and organize (for example) a get together?

I know that BoB was extremely helpful with some of the SAAND shows, but regarding a collectors society (as apose to a dealers society) I am not sure how BoB will feel.

The one single thing I do not want from this endeavour, is some back biting and back stabbing and "you said this" and "I said that" and the whole cancerous bla-bla-bla that have been huanting the SA Numismatic Community over recent times.

Then I am out of this immidiately

Pierre

Hi Pierre

You are welcome to use the forum to discuss, plan and communicate via regarding the society, the only rule we have is not to post contact details in public.

Regarding sponsorship and financial assistance I am not sure we would consider this, as we already pay large amounts for advertising to get new buyers to the site. If there is commercial value and solid business reasons to do so we would possibly consider it but this would need to be discussed after you have set up and finalised your goals and requirements of the society.

Kind regards

Cuan

Hi

I have been collecting coins for some time now and have personally interacted with Georg. I learn something new everytime I meet with Georg and as always, Georg has something new to share everytime we meet. I mean no disrespect to any other 'well known' numismatics that I have dealt with when I say that Georg is always oblidging with no alteria motives and has always given me honest and sound advice from both, a collector and investor point of view. If anything, he has made numismatics a joy for me. It is genuine knowledge, experience and a sincere passion like Georg's that is needed to bring SA Numismatics to the fore. This idea is a fantastic one and to have Georg at the helm will certainly see this Society setting of in the right direction from the onset.

I just hope I meet the eligibilty criteria in making my application!

Thanks again to Georg for bringing South African Numismatists together.

Hassim

Hello all Collectors,

We have been talking about this for a while and need to put substance to it.

We the collectors of coins ,notes, medals and tokens of South Africa need a body that represents us at national level.

We need this because we have different aims and philosophies to the professional dealers as represented by SAAND.

We are the lifeblood of this hobby.

Without us, any coin show is dead meat whatever anybody attempts to portray.

Whilst we may sell amongst ourselves , this is largely done to upgrade our collections. It is not merely to speculate.

Our ethic should be that of extending our knowledge and by helping each other in good faith, discover the true richness in our hobby. Friendships will follow on this common ground.

We have the most to gain by showing and sharing what we have with much dedication and sacrifice put together. Our collections as a whole should not just be squirreled away thus becoming lost to all to enjoy.

Hence we should have our own coin shows where we can meet and enjoy each other's collections in a relaxed safe environment without feeling we are standing on the toes of SAAND . Any recognised conference centre will be suitable with families welcome.

I propose the name of this body should be THE SOUTH AFRICAN COLLECTORS SOCIETY.

Membership will be by application to the steering committee and if successful, the member will be invited to join.

Benefits of membership will include ;

24 hour hotline to give opinions on fair prices for members thus stopping the exploitation of our members by the unscrupulous.

Help with grading at third party grading companies.

The monitoring of postal and courier fraud.

Second opinions on gradability of coins sourced by members.

Information about forgeries and literature on rare coins.

Information on upcoming foreign auctions.

Better listing costs for members to be negotiated with Bidorbuy.

Possibility of using Paypal via FNB to receive money on eBay auctions.

Education of the public about collectables as they relate to History thus broadening the market.

I call on all collectors to stand up as one and enjoy our awesome riches together. We have a National Asset to be proud of and this should be recognised as such.

Please respond to this posting and give us your views.

The South African Numismatic Collectors Society

Hello all collectors,

Apologies for the delay but I have been overseas and busy with work lately.

Thanks a lot for your widespread support for something that really seems to have a need amongst us.

I invite all interested persons to send me a PM or email so that I can draw up a list of accepted members. I need to know your particular sphere of collection so that we can get an idea of groupings in future contacts with each other.

I will endeavour to develope this society to its full potential and realise the principles outlined above.

Regards

Georg

This sounds like a wonderful idea, I do hope eccentric collectors like myself would have a chance at joining, I love certain South African coins and collect them for their lustre, pictograhic uniqueness, and certain other criteria which may not cause the coin to have an essential intrinsic value. Like they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I do have a few gold collectables, mostly silver though. Hope this comes off the ground, happy to assist in any way whatsoever.

I only recently started collecting coins. I have 225 coins, most are local but I also collect from abroad. I'm also part of an International group who send out coins to each other. I would like to join this group but like manny others.. I collect mostly circulated coins and I'm new to this.

Will you only be focusing on Proof, cerified, and gold coins or is it open to annyone?

Let me know. Coz if you you only cater for the "Prime" collectors I would like to try and get togeter something for the "not so Prime" collectors.

This might be a split on your site, seperating the circulated from the uncirculated.

But like I said. Please let me know.

Hi Anthony,

I brought forward this idea and it is a seed that is bearing fruit at a person to person level.Collectors are realising the richness of their hobby and how it somehow has become a way of life.

I have a list of members but it is hard to have conferences and meetings other than shared ideas at Internet level so far.

Almost immediately there is a tendency to use such a body as just another buying selling platform. That is not the point at all.

People who look for lists and meetings are missing the point. It is the Philosophy of Numismatics that is primary. All else will follow. We own nothing really, are only custodians of these relics but have lots to share.

Suggestion

Hi Georg

If I may make a suggestion.

Why not post a set of guidelines in a new thread for people interested in joining. These can then be discussed in an open forum and refined or added to.

I own several hundred domains (a few could be relevant as a start) and can initially support the concept with free hosting (through my hosting company).

Once the guidelines have been generally accepted then an invitation could be sent out for people to join. Someone out there would have to do the web work and administer forum stuff.

If it is done right it could quickly become the major focus of coin collectors specialising in South Africa and Africa. Who knows BoB might even sponsor the site in the future :)

Believe me without a set of guidelines (covering the issues you discussed) the idea won't go anywhere.

Kind regards

Scott Balson

It's a cold winter's night in Brisbane, Australia .. but as an online collector of South African coins I agree with you Dulal.

I have sent PMs expressing interest in being involved but, to date, have heard nothing. Surely this is a wonderful opportunity for those involved in developing the online South African coin catalogue to walk into a very empty space?

Kind regards
